The RSN Sandown Cup in Australia is set to become one of the world's richest races, with prize money raising to a highest ever $250,000 (£161,000).

Connections of the winning greyhound currently earn $175,000, which is already a considerable prize even before this value increase.

Sandown Greyhound Racing Club chairman Geoff Dawson commented: "The RSN Sandown Cup is one of Australia's best races, and now carries a purse worthy of such status".

Sandown chief executive Greg Miller also spoke out about the change, commenting that the increased prize money was part of an overall push to increase the profile of greyhound racing.

Miller continued by saying: "Staying races are not only a fantastic spectacle, but an integral feature of the sport, highlighting the greyhound's strength and stamina."

In another boost, any greyhound who can claim the new Sandown Triple Crown (made up of the Shootout, Melbourne Cup and one of the Harrison-Dawson or Sapphire Crown) will receive $1,000,000 (£643,000).
